Skiing in Finland offers a different experience to that of the Alps. It is visited far less frequently by British skiers which is perhaps an appealing point in itself!
It is naturally a nation of incredible beauty and certainly makes an ideal destination for families. The scenery is remarkable enclosed by frozen lakes, ice-sculpted woodland and uncrowded slopes. Finland is not just about the downhill skiing like many of the other resorts (especially the purpose built ones). There is an enormous collection of other Arctic activities making Finland quite an inimitable ski holiday. Snow-shoeing, ice fishing, ice carting, husky and reindeer sleigh rides as well as the incredible Northern lights are certainly things to experience!
The resorts here are filled with a calm charisma and charm with the skiing being mainly in Lapland, situated directly above the Arctic Circle. The resorts are at lower altitude than many of the European resorts yet snow is without doubt guaranteed. The skiing is perhaps best suited to beginners and intermediates although experts will find off-piste surprisingly extensive.
The ski schools as well are well renowned with English speaking instructors. The 3 main resorts are Rovaniemi which is the capital of Finland, along with Yllas and Levi, respectively. Yllas is the largest downhill resort in Finland whilst Levi is perhaps the most cosmopolitan of the resorts with a good choice of bars, restaurants and entertainment.
