Description

Nassfeld Ski Arena in Carinthia, Austria’s ‘sunny south,’ is relatively unknown to the British market but, with its modern lift system, excellent snow record and fantastic facilities, it is a great choice for all levels of skiers.

The Millennium Express, the longest gondola in the Alps, takes just 17 minutes to transport you to an altitude in excess of 2,000m. From here you will have access to an impressive 110km of slopes, 30 modern lifts, mountain bars and restaurants galore while enjoying stunning views of both the Austrian and Italian Alps.

The longest run, the Carnia, is 7.6km long and you can even try night skiing as part of the run is opened every Wednesday night making it the longest floodlit piste in the Alps.

Boarders are well catered for. There are two parks with quarter pipes, kickers, table tops and a snow cross park which was the venue of the 2004 Junior World Championships.

There is also an excellent English speaking ski/board school for beginners or those of you wanting to improve your on-slope skills and an excellent children’s ‘Bobo’ ski school.

Apres

There are 14 mountain restaurants and bars where you can enjoy the famous Austrian hospitality and cuisine and also sample delicacies from nearby Italy and Slovenia.

There are plenty of après ski bars as you make your way down the mountain but the resort itself is fairly quiet. The Baren Hütte, near the gondola base holds daily après ski parties that go on until late. There are a few nightclubs and an ultra-modern sports bar near the base of the gondola.

Activities

You can try night skiing as 2.2km of the resort’s “Carnia” run is floodlit every Wednesday night, making it the longest floodlit piste in the Alps.

Europe’s largest natural ice rink, Lake Weissensee, is well worth a visit or even take a toboggan run. There is also alternative snow equipment on the mountain like sledges, rubber tubes, snowbikes, airboard or skifox and plenty of Nordic walking tracks.
