Description

La Tania sits at 1330m in the middle of the 3 Valleys, between Meribel and Courchevel. The resort is relatively new located in the heart of a pine forest, initially it was built to house the competitors for the 1992 Olympic Games.

La Tania is a quiet village with an attractive collection of accommodation including both chalets and apartments dotted all over the mountainside, due to its location many of the accommodation offers ski in/ski out access. There is one main gondola servicing the resort which takes guests directly up the mountain. At the base of the La Tania gondola there are a few lively bars and restaurants.

La Tania is a popular choice for families who are attracted by the timber clad chalets and relaxed atmosphere, ideal for their children. The resorts is frequently used as a base by groups to explore the 3 Valleys ski area as it allows access to Meribel, Courchevel and Val Thorens at a fraction of a price as actually staying within these resorts.

Getting There

If you haven’t booked a package where flights and transfers are included for you then you will need to think about the best way fo you to get out to resort.

Fly

The most common way to get to resort is to fly. There are four airport possibilities:
Chambery -  95km - 1h30
Geneva- 180km - 2h30
Lyon - 200km- 3h
Grenoble - 125km- 2h45

The closest airport is Chambery but Geneva offers a wider array of departure airports and flights times.

Transfers from the airport

There are several companies which offer both shared and private transfers from the above airports directly to resort. Most transfers companies will drop you off anywhere in resort and can take you directly to your accommodation. It is worth checking out the transfer options before booking flights as shared transfers run less often so you don’t want to be left waiting hours at the airport.

Our recommended transfer companies include:

3VT offers private and shared transfers from Geneva. They do have a limited number of shared transfers going every weekend so you need to be quick to book one. There service is no frills allowing them to offer a very competitive cost.

Snow White Transfers offer shared and private transfers form all the airports mentioned above. They offer refreshments and blankets to all their guests
.
Snow Drone offer both shared and private transfers at all times throughout the day. Being one of the larger companies they have the most frequent shared transfers heading in and out of resort. It is essential to book in advance though. They also offer luxury transfers with iPads and TVs to entertain both adults and children alike on longer journeys. They operate out of all the major airports.

If you are looking for a bit more luxury and an even shorter transfer time then Whitetracks Helicopters offer transfers for up to 4 people from any of the above airports and provide a separate vehicle for luggage. Helicopters are susceptible to the weather though, if there is any cancellation vehicles are provided at no extra cost.

Train

The nearest train stations for La Tania is Moutiers which is approximately 30 minutes a way. It is a major French railway station so the Eurostar does stop here, alternatively it is an option to catch the regional TGV from Paris straight to Moutiers. The Eurostar runs from London St Pancreas and Kent Ashford directly to Paris. Although the train takes longer than flying it is more environmentally friendly but also it can be economically friendly too when travelling with lots of luggage as no extra charges are incurred for the quantity and weight of luggage.

Drive

Many people do enjoy driving out to the Alps. If coming from the UK, you can either take the ferry or travel via the Channel Tunnel. The Channel Tunnel departs approximately every 15 minutes from Folkestone and takes 35 minutes. Prices start from £90 each way. To book your crossing head to

Alternatively the ferry runs from Hull to Zeebrugge or Dover to Calais with P&O Ferries. The Hull ferry operates daily and runs overnight arriving in Zeebrugge at 08:45am. The Dover to Calais ferry operates multiple times every day, up to 23 times and takes 90 minutes. To book either of these ferry crossings head to http://www.poferries.com/en/portal

Upon arrival in France/ Belgium remember to drive on the right hand side of the road! Also note that there will be several tolls along the route to your final destination, these will all be located on the opposite side of the car to the driver, so it is easy to have a passenger ready to make payments and take any receipts. The prices of these tolls will vary on the route that you take, the approximate cost of these tolls will be 75€.

European travel/ vehicle requirements are very strict and on the spot fines can be issued if you do not meet the requirements. The most common of these are headlight converters, GB sticker, warning triangle, spare bulbs, breathalysers, and high viz vests for each passenger in the car.

Although the local municipalities work tirelessly to keep the roads clear, there are times when the roads may become snowy or icy. It is a legal requirement in France to carry snow chains in your vehicle, if you do not, the police will refuse you access on certain mountain roads. When driving in these conditions, slow down when you encounter any snow, use high gears to avoid wheel spin and keep moving when driving up an incline on snow.

It can be useful to have a car whilst you’re in resort if your accommodation is far away from the centre and slopes. There are two car parks just outside the resort and if you would like to reserve a space in a covered car park just contact the Tourist Office directly who will be able to sort it for you.

When to Go

La Tania sits at 1350m, one of the lowest purpose built ski resorts. The resort opens for the winter season mid-December to mid-April and opens again very swiftly afterwards for the increasingly popular hiking and other summer activities.

The 3 Valleys has an excellent snow record in its higher resorts of Val Thorens and Courchevel. Val Thorens even has a glacier to maintain skiing throughout the winter. La Tania is one of the lower resorts that the area has to offer, but it compensates for this with an array of snow-canons. These work tirelessly from November all the way through to the spring. These are especially focused on covering the green and the blue runs back into the village.

Unusually for ski resorts, La Tania struggles with the sun, which often disappears early in the afternoon due to its location on the mountain. This double-edged sword allows preservation of the snow, but also results in some icy patches along the slopes. If the ice is a problem for beginners, there is always the option of riding the La Tania gondola down to the village.

The resort does remain relatively busy throughout the year as it offers such good value for money within the 3 Valleys ski area. As it is quite small and there are limited facilities, it can seem busy at times. However due to the small nature of the resort the queues are never that long and they move quickly so everyone can get up the mountain in no time at all.

Travelling during peak weeks does get relatively expensive. Due to the size of the chalets and the vicinity to the slopes, it is a very popular destination for families and large groups. However it is during these peak weeks that the resort has the most going on.

Where to Stay

La Tania is a relatively small ski village with all the chalets dotted along the mountainside among the trees. Due to the compact nature of the resort, La Tania operates a no- vehicle policy so all the accommodation is in easy walking distance of amenities. There is also no need to worry about carrying equipment very far as nearly all of the accommodation is close to the slopes.

La Tania is split into four main districts; the base of the mountain which is where the village is and the main ski lift heads off from, Quatier des Chalets to the left of the lift, Hameau du Formier and Hameau de la Tagna off to the right near the Troika chairlift and its nursery slope.

Getting around

By Bus

La Tania is a compact resort making it very convenient and easy to get around on foot so there is not bus service around the resort itself. There are frequent bus services to the neighbouring villages of Courchevel and Le Praz.

By Car

La Tania is a pedestrian only resort. It does house two complimentary car parks, the Parking du Saz and Parking du Formier. As it is a vehicle free resort, they have made sure that all the shops and services are located within walking distance.

Ski Lifts

La Tania is serviced by one main gondola and two other lifts. From the top of the gondola, it is simply one short chairlift to the slopes of Meribel and Courchevel 1850. This makes it not only easy to explore both of these resorts, but also very easy and convenient to head back into La Tania at the end of the day. Within the resort itself La Tania offers a drag lift called Troika which services the beginner area.

Taxis

Taxis are an efficient way of getting to the neighbouring resorts of Meribel and Courchevel. Taxis are not as common so it is advised to book in advance.

Apres

At first glance you would presume that the après ski and nightlife would be limited in such a small family focussed resort however there are a few bars placed around the base of the slopes and are all good value for money.

Pub le Ski Lodge is the heart of apres ski in La Tania. The bar serves hearty cocktails and throughout the week they also play host to many live bands which adds to the atmosphere. Many call it the ‘Jagaerbomb Heaven.’

The La Taiga bar is another popular spot with a modern and bright cocktail menu. The bar has plasma TVs displaying all the local sports matches and live music regularly throughout the week. A cosy fire and relaxing atmosphere tempt people who are looking for a calmer night.

Eating out

With only 10 restaurants in La Tania’s immediate vicinity, the choice might seem limited but each of them has something very good to offer and can cater to almost everyone’s needs. Most of the restaurants thrive offering local dishes in a relaxed, cosy atmosphere.

Pub le Ski Lodge is a popular sport in resort. The menu features many British classics like fish and chips, burgers and apple crumble, as well as some more unusual options including kangaroo.

Le Farcon earned its Michelin Star in 2006 and has been on the must visit list for La Tania ever since. It frequently attracts visitors from far afield to sample the menu’s delicacies, even famed chefs come to try it. Classic dishes on the menu include rabbit, lobster and pigeon.

Taiga is located over the road from the main village. It is owned by the same people as the Pub le Ski Lodge. Slightly smarter and more traditional atmosphere, the restaurant has a Savoyard menu including snails, duck, venison and fondue.

La Ferme is located within the village itself. Billed as a family-friendly, slopeside restaurant, this is great stop off for either lunch or dinner. With many delicious options such as fondue, raclette, pizza and the regions cote de boeuf, there are many things to enjoy about this restaurant.

Les Marmottons is thought to be the best pizza spot in La Tania. They have a vast menu so if pizza does not suit everyone there are many other cheesy and meaty classics to choose from.

For Mountain Restaurants:

Bouc Bouc is in the heart of La Tania’s ski area. It is also a good lunch destination if you are whizzing around Courchevel and looking for a reasonably priced, quality lunch. With friendly table service and reliable food it is a staple lunch spot in the 3 Valleys. Both the plat du jour and wine is excellent value.

Wok Ski is located at the bottom of the Moraine chairlift. It is a quick stop off if you are wanting to make the most of the snow. Not only is it quick but it is also a healthy alternative to some of the other restaurants with homemade noodle and rice bowls.

Le Cap Horn is for those wanting a long leisurely treat for lunch. Located in Courchevel’s Altiport, it is vital to book a table in advance here. Their huge terrace is ideal in the warmer months, especially when the DJ comes out at après time. Seafood and sushi are the most popular choices here.

Activities

If you have a non-skier in the group or if you fancy taking a break from the mountain you might want to consider some non-skiing activities that are available both in the resort and close by.

Snowshoeing is a popular sport in La Tania. Take a stroll through the trees on cleared snow paths with an experienced guide to offer local titbits about the surrounding nature and area. You never know what wildlife you will stumble across! Many of the local ski hire shops offer snow shoes for rental.

Tobogganing is always tempting in the Alps and La Tania has made this even more attractive. In the early evening the Troika run is lit up by floodlights. Many of the local shops have sledges to rent or buy.

Swimming is always a popular choice for children and adults alike. La Tania has a swimming pool, Jacuzzi and sauna in the Hotel Montana. This is available for people who are not guests of the hotel at a slight cost. Alternatively the complimentary shuttle bus that runs to Courchevel stops at the Aquamotion pool. This is an enormous pool complex with rapid river slides, salt pool, outdoor pools just to name a few.

La Tania and the 3 Valleys all offer a pedestrian pass which allows pedestrians to take any of the bubble lifts up the mountain. Whether you want to meet the rest of your group for lunch or just bask in the sun, it is a lovely thing to do when in the Alps.

If you are wanting something a bit more adventurous why not try a paragliding flight form the top of the La Tania gondola or head over to Courchevel for some luxury shopping and spa treatments.

Family ski

La Tania has always been a popular resort for families wanting a quiet and convenient base to explore the area.

For families looking for childcare, there are several options available. Families may choose to use a local crèche or a private nanny service. It is advisable to book your childcare in advance especially if you plan to travel during school holidays in order to secure the care you need and avoid disappointment.

Crèche Facilities

La Tania has one crèche in the village, La Taniere des Croes. If you would like to meet your children up the piste for lunch then a nanny can bring them up and down safely, they can do ski school drop off and pickups throughout the day as well as evening babysitting. Private nannies will provide a varied experience and often create a specific activity plan to suit your child’s age. The nannies will usually get in touch with you before you arrive in resort allowing you to give them as much information about your children as possible. This method tends to offer the most personal and bespoke childcare programme.

Possible private nannying companies operating in La Tania are:

T4 Nanny thought of by their clients as the ‘loveliest in the Alps.’ They live and work in the La Tania resort so they are very familiar with it. This means they know the best spots for sledging and for a hot chocolate!

La Tania offers a great compromise for the beginner skiers, with easy access to nursery slopes. More advanced skiers can easily get up and out into the 3 Valleys' extensive network.

It’s not a large resort, and all the various ski hire shops, restaurants and amenities are all within easy reach. The lifts out of the resort whisk skiers up into the Three Valley’s expansive slopes in moments, so ski access is easy too.

Parents in search of childcare have many options to consider in La Tania. Le Jardin des Neiges is available to youngsters of 4+, with a host of experienced ESF instructors guiding children into their first turns on the snow.

If you’re looking for non-ski activities to keep the kids entertained away from the slopes, La Tania and the surrounding villages offer all you could need. Across Courchevel, la Tania and Meribel, you’ll find climbing walls, swimming pools, and games arcades where kids can let off steam. There are snow-shoeing trails in the forests between La Tania and Meribel, and a number of beautiful dog-sledding tracks tracing through the alpine wilderness. Night sledging for families takes place in the centre of La Tania on the floodlit slopes, and cinemas and bowling alleys in Courchevel and Meribel offer evenings of fun for all the family.

The Piste

The ski area of La Tania is not large, instead it is an excellent platform to jump off for the rest of the 3 valleys.

Beginners

La Tania hosts a good beginner area with the nursery slopes centrally located at the bottom of one of the main runs into the resort. The beginner area is serviced by a free drag lift. The run can get quite busy so beginners may prefer to head to the beginner area at the top of the Praz Juget gondola which is a few lifts from La Tania and is generally slightly quieter.

Intermediates

Intermediates will languish in the long, undulating runs of La Tania. The red, blue and green of the area are relatively similar in terms of gradient and it is only the width that differs them. Mountain goers will all enjoy zipping down the curvy and narrow Plan Fontaine back into the village.

For slightly more challenging slopes, intermediates should head to the local Murettes and Lanches runs. These reds are quite steep and offer winding turns, adding some interest and challenges. For intermediates wanting to challenge themselves, Val Thorens is only six lifts away and offers a plethora of runs. A massive 75% of all the runs in the 3 Valleys are suitable for intermediate skiers so there is so much choice!

Advanced

For the expert skiers, the mountainside directly above La Tania is relatively steep, providing some challenging runs. The Jean Blanc and Jockey black runs are a true endurance test and often have some nice mogul fields.

If off-piste is your thing then the Dou des Lanches Chairlift offers an array of good off-piste terrain as well as an easy groomed black. Local guides are widely available at the ski schools in La Tania. They will be able to provide the appropriate gear for off piste as well as information about how to use it. They will also be able to find the best snow condition and maybe even a sneaky powder field!

Lift Passes

There are two options for guests staying in La Tania. The local Courchevel pass covers the courchevel valley including La Tania and Le Praz, alternatively the full Three Valley pass which covers the whole area.

6 Day Ski Pass     Courchevel Local Pass                Three Valley Pass
(includes La Tania and Le Praz)
Adult (13-64yrs)    €256                                             €300
Child (5-12yrs)      €205                                             €240
Senior (65-75yrs)  €231                                             €270

Groups of skiers can benefit from discounted prices.  A Duo deal is available to Two Adults buying a 3 Valleys or Courchevel only pass for 6 days or longer in a single purchase. This carries a discount of approximately 10€ per person.

For a Family Ski Pass there must be 2 adults and at least 2 children (up to 19 years old), buying a pass for 6 days or longer. All the family must purchase the same type of pass for the same duration. Extra children (up to 19 years old) can be added to the pass. All members pay the child rate.

Saturday Passes are available every Saturday throughout the season exclusively on the 3 Valleys website. This is a discounted pass valid for Saturdays only and must be purchased in advance. They offer 20% off the total 3 Valleys day pass. This is great to consider if you are travelling on the Saturday and want to get a few hours skiing in if you arrive whilst the lifts are still open.

Beginners are able to test their skills without committing to a full pass for either area. The Troika lift is free, which is great for the first few days. After this it is likely that the beginner will be ready to branch out into the wider area. If you are still not confident enough to buy a pass to Courchevel only or the 3 Valleys, then maybe the Easy Rider Mini Pass might be a good option. This is available for everyone aged between 5-75 years old for 28€ per day. This only allows access to Courchevel 1850, Courchevel Moriond 1650, Courchevel 1550, Courchevel Le Praz 1300 and La Tania 1400.

Early Season discounts are often available for lift passes in the first week of opening and possibly in the final week before the resort closes. This could be up to a 10% reduction depending on the snow conditions so it is worth a check on the resorts lift pass website closer to the time of your holiday.

Pedestrian passes are available both on the website and at the lift pass office in La Tania. The type of pass that you need will depend on where on the mountain you would like to head to. If you are unsure, it is probably best to ask in the Lift Pass office when you arrive in the resort as they are the best placed to advise what pass will be needed to get to a specific place.

You can purchase your pass online in advance or from the lift pass office in resort. You can also purchase your pass through the tour operator you have booked with which who will deliver it to your accommodation.
