Apres

Crazy party nights are few and far between in the small resort of Les Carroz. It is not particularly geared up for the après ski scene, with only a few bars in the resort itself. Our advice is that if a lively après ski scene ranks highly on your checklist for a ski resort, you should look further afield to larger resorts. However, there are still a few places in town to sink a pint or two.

A popular bar for après ski is the Marlow pub, located in the centre of the resort. The sun terrace and friendly staff make it the perfect place to chill out after a long day on the slopes.

Carpe Diem is one of the après pubs that is open from 2pm. From the front it is relatively unassuming, but inside they have a pool table and dartboard as well as TVs screening sports matches.

If you want to take the après ski session late into the night, then head to Club 74, which is the resort’s only nightclub. The interior is modern, with small seating areas just off the main dance floor. They have regular club nights with 80s pop music and are open from 11pm until 7am if you’re not planning to make first lifts the next day!

Eating out

Les Carroz sits just below the resort of Flaine and whilst the ski area is large and varied and the resort is good value and caters well for families, the selection of restaurants in the town is minimal. That said, the resort does boast one Michelin star restaurant – Les Servages.

Les Servages
This is the gourmet restaurant in Les Carroz and can be found within the hotel Les Servages d’Armelle. Under the watchful eye of head chef Pascal Flecheau exquisite dishes are created into a gastronomic feast. Whether you’re looking for local specialities of raclette or fondue or fancier dishes such as lobster with butter and tarragon, the menu here is a truly stand out option compared to other restaurants in resort. A meal here doesn’t come cheap and you must book in advance.

L’Agora
The Agora offers a selection of Savoyard and Italian platters; whether it’s a fondue or pizza you’re after, this restaurant serves up tasty food and generous portions. It situated just above the main square and is a good choice for a family meal out. Reports suggest that booking is essential!

La Chouia
The restaurant serves mainly Italian cuisine and has a friendly atmosphere. Great for a casual evening meal or lunchtime stop off and good for families too.

Activities

Les Carroz is a sprawling resort at the top end of the Grand Massif, and whilst the ski area is large and varied, there isn’t a huge amount in the way of off-slope activities.

If you want to get out in the fresh alpine air, snowshoeing is an inexpensive activity to take in the beautiful surroundings. You can either hire a guide to show you the way or go it alone, following the well signposted walking trails close to the resort centre. Lots of the routes are gentle with only small inclines, so it makes for easy exercise if you’re not in peak condition. If you prefer something more social, you can book onto organised walks with the local Bureau des Guides which can be interesting as they tell you facts about the surrounding area along the way.

If you fancy upping the pace slightly, a dog sled ride is a fantastic and thrilling way to get out and about. You will be in charge of your own sled of up to four huskies and they will drive you through the forest tracks. A qualified instructor will give you a quick introduction to handling the sled and the huskies and then you’re off! The dogs have an incredible energy and just keep running – an hour session costs around €60.

For thrill-seekers, a great way to see the Grand Massif is by parapenting (paragliding). This is best done towards the end of the winter season in March and April when the warmer spring conditions make the gliding easier. Once attached to your instructor you will ski off a drop on the mountain and once the piste slips away from your feet you can soar hundreds of meters above the valley floor, enjoying the stunning scenery of Les Carroz’s surroundings. It costs around €65 for a flight. http://parapenteplanete.free.fr/index.htm
