Description

Megève is a French mountain town with a medieval heart and a stylish reputation, nestled near Mont Blanc at an altitude of 1,100m with groomed pistes running up to 2,355m. When the snow is falling and the lights are twinkling, there’s nowhere quite like it — a remarkably pretty place. Charming boutiques and chic hotels line the walkways, and the Alpine scenery is breathtaking.

With sheltered slopes, a broad range of beginner-friendly terrain, a relaxed après ski scene, and a large range of non-ski activities to engage in, Megève is a strong choice for parents taking the kids to the Alps. The ski schools in operation here have a good reputation, running a broad range of classes to learners and improvers of all levels and ages.

Getting There

Geneva is Megève’s closest international airport, and the drive in to resort from there takes around 1 to 1.5 hours. The train station at St Gervais les Bains is also nearby, and worth looking into if you prefer train travel to the Alps. Services run from London St Pancras via Paris.

When to Go

Megeve is only an hour drive from Geneva so makes a popular choice for a short break as it means you can keep travel time to a minimum. Megeve is relatively low altitude so does struggle with snow during the early and late weeks of the season.

Where to Stay

Megève is a chic and stylish resort, home to a high number of traditional and charming hotels and chalets — visitors are spoiled for choice! Compared to many other French ski resorts of this size, there’s very little by way of packaged ski holidays with flights and airport transfers laid on by UK tour operators. But if you’re willing to plan the travel side of things separately, you can choose from a very good range of delightful catered chalets in diverse locations around the valley.

Getting around

Megeve is relatively small so it is relatively easy to get anywhere on foot. There are buses available to access the nearby resorts of Chamonix and St Gervais.

Apres

The team behind La Folie Douce have set up camp in Megève, offering the brand’s heady blend of pumping house music, piste-side dancing and Alpine delicacies to the resort’s party-loving clientele. But don’t be fooled — away from the lively Folie Douce, things are a lot more sedate. Those looking for lively nightlife are better off elsewhere as Megève is low-key in the evenings. The bars here are friendly though, with regular live music nights.
Aside from the ever-popular Folie Douce, venues such as Palo Alto, Le Cocoon, Les 5 Rues, Casino, The Lodge Bar, Spaggiari, M Le Vin, Le Georges, Comme Chez Soi and Bar le Chalet Zannier are well worth a look.

Eating out

Megève is famed for the diversity and quality of its culinary offerings — both on and off the mountain. If you’re in search of a truly special dining experience you’ll find Michelin-ranked restaurants to try, but by the same token there’s plenty to choose from for visitors on a more modest budget. Savoyard specialities are of course popular, and you’ll find everything from burger joints to pizza and pasta restaurants.

Activities

If you’re in need of ways to tire the kids out away from the slopes, or you have a non-skier or two in your group, Megève is on hand with an impressive range of pursuits and activities to enjoy. There are fine hiking trails throughout Megève and beyond, a sports centre with pool, climbing wall, indoor tennis, curling and sauna, plus a whole host of exciting outdoor adventures such as parapente or hot-air ballooning to enjoy.

Ski School

The following ski schools are found in Megeve - ESF, Oxygene, Ski Technique and BASS. All schools offer both group and private lessons. Group lessons will be cheaper but are less intense than one to one tuition. If you are unsure what lessons will be most suitable for you then the majority of schools will be happy to chat through your requirements and suggest which lesson will be most suitable.

The English-speaking ski lessons with Oxygene are superb. They teach little ones in their private snow garden from age 3, have a great lunch club for kids up to age 12, and a fantastic weekend programme of kids lessons too. We recommend adults book a private instructor or guide to ski the best Megeve has to offer.

Getting around

Megeve is relatively small so it is relatively easy to get anywhere on foot. There are buses available to access the nearby resorts of Chamonix and St Gervais.

Family ski

Megève offers largely sunny south-facing slopes, with a traditional mountain town atmosphere and a warm welcome to families and youngsters. There’s a good range of kindergarten facilities in Megève’s various sectors, and a wide selection of pistes suited to beginner and intermediate skiers and snowboarders. Megève also holds the Famille Plus Montagne award for the quality of its family-friendly facilities and services. The resort has put in place a child-friendly infrastructure, with activities and entertainments to help parents and kids enjoy their time in the resort to the full.

You’ll find nursery slopes within easy reach of the resort, which is great for families, and further nursery areas tucked higher up the mountainsides. For further progression, Megève also offers a great range of gentle green pistes and steeper blues.  The ski area is massive, with terrain for all levels, but it’s perhaps best-suited to intermediates. Lifts can be a little on the slow side, and many are in need of upgrade. The ski schools in Megève have a great reputation, and there are classes and clinics for learners and improvers of all levels.

There’s plenty to do away from the groomed slopes in Megève, in case bad weather closes in or the kids need a break from the skiing. Kids from eight years old and upwards can try their hand at dog-sledding in the snowy wilderness outside the resort, and for something a little more sedate, you can take the family on a horse and carriage ride through the town. For kids aged six and over, Megève offers a superb tobogganing slopes on the Cote 2000 sector, and there’s an indoor paddling pool and ice rink to enjoy, too. Families who buy the Evasion lift pass can enjoy unlimited free access to the resort’s sports centre, too, which offers swimming pool and a wide array of family-friendly facilities.

Group Ski

Groups of skiers and snowboarders have a wealth of reasons to give the charming and characterful ski resort of Megève a try, and its one place that deserves a spot on anyone’s must-ski list. First up, the ski area: Megève offers access to three peaks with a massive ski area perhaps best suited to beginner and intermediate skiers and boarders. Although the resort’s altitude is only 1,100 metres above sea level, the groomed slopes do reach up to over 2,300 metres and coverage is generally good from December through until April. Many of the lifts are on the slow side, but the scenery makes up for that – and to be fair, they are being slowly but steadily replaced each passing season.

Intermediate-level skiers will love Megève’s cruisy runs with beautiful scenery and welcoming piste-side cafes. Experts are perhaps better off elsewhere, though, as Megève offers little by way of challenging terrain.

Down in town, groups of friends and families have a wealth of amenities to enjoy, from traditional bars and cafes to stylish shops and healthy wellness facilities. For après skiers and party animals, Megève’s après ski scene is actually rather low key and quiet, although the relatively recent arrival of the resort’s new Folie Douce après ski bar and restaurant has changed that somewhat.

Megève’s medieval centre is car-free and peaceful, and it’s here that you’ll find the open-air ice-rink and horse-drawn carriages. With a pretty church towering over ancient, cobbled streets and soft snow falling from above, Megève can be a genuinely beautiful alpine town to enjoy.

In summary, Megève  is a charming resort with extensive pistes for intermediates, however it is limited for expert skiers. Megève has some good mountain restaurants and has a few bars but nothing too lively. The majority of accommodation in Megève is made up of traditional hotels, with very few chalet options compared to other French resorts of this stature.

Childcare

Parents in need of childcare during their Megève holiday can turn to Merinannies — a well-established childcare company operating in a range of different Alpine ski destinations. Nannies are carefully chosen for their experience and qualifications, and there’s a diverse and exciting program of indoor and outdoor events and activities to keep the kids amused and entertained during your stay. You can book full or part-time day care to suit your schedule, and rations are carefully planned to ensure kids are properly cared for at all times.

Alternatively, the Les Frimouses nursery is a great service to turn to. This day nursery welcomes children from the age of eighteen months to four years of age, with trained and experienced carers on hand and a wide selection of indoor and outdoor activities ensuring kids enjoy their first trip to the slopes.

Childcare activities on offer in Megève include arts and crafts, tobogganing, snowman-building and more, and there are plenty of dedicated play-areas for kids to enjoy their first trips to the snow.

The Piste

Up on the slopes, Megève is best suited to beginner and especially intermediate skiers. There’s a decent selection of green runs around the Mt d’Arbois and le Jaillet peaks — both within easy reach of the town — and a wonderful range of rolling blue and red pistes to explore right across the valleys.

Much of the terrain is sheltered below the treeline, which is ideal if the weather closes in. Expert skiers have limited challenging terrain to hit, though, as there’s a distinct shortage of black-grade runs. A lack of investment in the lift system compared to many other resorts this size means the lifts in Megève are generally pretty slow.

Whilst stylish and swanky Megève may not spring to most people’s minds as a freeride hotspot, the resort is actually home to a number of terrain parks with a fine range of kickers, rails and hits to push yourself on. Resorts such as Avoriaz or Méribel are perhaps better choices for advanced freestyle skiers, but if you’re a learner or confident intermediate skier or snowboarder, you’ll find the parks here do the job nicely. There’s the Waidzai Park on Rochebrun, the Combloux Snowpark near le Jaillet, and another near the Mont Joux lift on Mont d'Arbois. You’ll also find a couple of exciting snow-cross runs to zoom along.

Equipment Hire

The following ski hire stores are found in Megeve - Intersport, Skimium, Sport 2000 and SkiSet. All stores offer the latest range of ski and snowboard equipment. It is recommended that you pre book your hire in advance as the majority of stores will offer online discounts.
