Description

Valmorel was purpose built in the mid-1970s and was intended to look and feel like a traffic-free mountain village with pretty wood clad buildings. It is made up of several 'hameaux' or hamlets and has doorstep skiing from all areas. The slopes are extensive by most standards and with good snow conditions - there's enough here to keep everyone except real experts happy.

The lift system is starting to look old-fashioned with only one fast chair and one gondola on the local slopes. The ski area itself is a real intermediates playground with 152 km of wonderfully groomed pistes. Furthermore beginners benefit from the specially reserved beginners' ski area.

Valmorel is a good all round choice for an exciting weeks skiing and has considerable appeal with most visitors.

Apres

Valmorel is one of the smaller French ski resorts and as such doesn’t have much in the way of bars offering a lively apres ski scene. However, there are a handful of bars which you can pop into for liquid refreshment at the end of a day on the slopes.

La Source
Source bar can be found at the bottom of the slopes which makes it a great place to start the apres party. If you are in need of a refreshing drink at the end of a day on the slopes, this bar is ideally located for quick access post skiing. They have a good selection of beer on tap as well as a more exotic cocktail menu.

Sound Pub & Club
If you don’t want the merriment to end and are not planning on first lifts in the morning, then head over to Sound Pub & Club, Valmorel’s main nightclub. It’s open until 5am and has a lively atmosphere, happy hour between 22.00 and 01.00 and regular theme nights. They even have a free shuttle bus service to take you back to your accommodation at the end of the night.

Jimbo Lolo
This is a Tex-Mex restaurant, but is also a lively apres ski bar. The Jimbo Lolo has a warm and welcoming atmosphere and whilst the bar area is small, the sangria and margaritas flow whilst the Latino music plays, making for an entertaining apres session. They host regular karaoke nights too!

Eating out

Valmorel hasn’t quite made it onto the radar of British holiday makers or larger package operators, but it’s a hidden gem for skiing. The resort is quite small, yet there are still around 20 places to eat on and off the mountain. Most of the restaurants are typically Savoyarde in nature, however there are a few surprises, including the Tex-Mex restaurant.

La Marmite
If you are looking for a fondue or something equally as Alpine, La Marmite specializes in Savoyard cuisine. It’s best to book a table in the main restaurant rather than round the corner, so that you can enjoy the log fire and the ambience of the restaurant.

Le Table du Berger
Le Table du Berger serves food in the mid-price range. They do great pizzas, raclette, fondue and meat dishes. The owner Laurent is a presence within the restaurant and makes his customers feel welcome!

The Petit Prince
The Petit Prince is a wooden clad, chalet-styled restaurant and the prices are reasonable too. At around €10 for the plat du Jour or €14 for a two course meal, you can’t go wrong. Their food is tasty, with recipes being passed down through the generations. The Petit Prince is a good choice for a romantic meal for two.

Le Jimbo Lolo
Le Jimbo Lolo is the resorts Tex-Mex restaurant, which is a good alternative if you’ve had your fill of melted cheese and creamy garlic potatoes! The interior is flamboyant with a tropical vibe and on the menu you will find a selection of fajitas, grilled meats and spareribs.

Childcare

Valmorel has been recognised for its services to families by being awarded the ‘Famille Plus Montagne’, which highlights the resorts efforts towards making it family-friendly. There are plenty of designated sledging areas, a weekly torchlit descent, and a cinema within resort to keep children entertained. But if you want to try something slightly different, take a look at what Valmorel has to offer below:

Night Trappers Experience
Snow-shoeing and forest walks with parents can often become a little boring for the kids, so if you want them to have fun and learn about the mountain forests the snow trapper experience is perfect. Your guide will take you off the beaten track on snow shoes and then you get to slip down slopes on sledges before reaching the end for a hot chocolate around a camp fire. This is a great activity for the chalet staff night off, as it runs on a Wednesday between 18.30 and 21.00. It costs around €20 per child.

Airboarding
If teenagers are a little bored of sledging and want something slightly different, then airboarding is the way to go. An airboard is like an inflatable bodyboard and is the new craze to hit the Alps when it comes to sledging. In Valmorel a portion of slope is cordoned off daily from 17.00 so that you can hit the piste for a true adrenaline rush! The airboards pick up speed quickly, and you can get some airtime too if you go fast enough over a roller! Its run by ESF and supervised by instructors; it costs around €13 Euros for a descent and is suitable for teenagers and adults.

Snake Slip
The snake slip is perfect for children who are too young for the airboard experience. It consists of a series of plastic sledges linked together in a line so that you can sledge as a group down a specially designated piste. It’s also run by ESF and supervised by instructors, so parents can sit at the bottom and wait whilst the kids are looked after! But it’s so much fun that they may just want to have a go themselves!

Swimming Pool
If the weather sets in and the kids are restless stuck in the chalet, take them down to the resort’s swimming pool. There is a 25m long indoor pool, along with a paddling pool for really small ones and a fun pool for bigger kids. The waterfall, water cannon and giant waterslide are sure to keep everyone entertained. The pool is open daily and entry costs around €5.
