Description

Canazei is the most famous village in the beautiful Val di Fassa valley. It offers some 50km of very quiet local slopes, and one can easily access the vast Sella Ronda ski circuit for further exploration – the entire Dolomites Superski area offers just over 1200km of terrain. Canazei is also home to the oldest ski school in Italy, the Marmolada ski school, and the excellent childcare facilities make the resort a great choice for families.

The village of Canazei itself is positively charming. The locals are particularly friendly, especially if you make an effort with the language, and the scenery throughout this area of the Dolomites is truly spectacular. Better yet, there are some fantastic mountain restaurants and delightful après-ski spots to enjoy.

Hotels are the most common accommodation in Canazei and many of them can include UK flights and transfers in the package.

Getting There

Holidaymakers interested in the Italian resort can fly into Treviso (155km away), Innsbruck (157km away) and Venice (170km away). Within the resort itself, a free bus service connects Canazei and Pozza with the main Belvedere gondola.

The resort organises a full festive schedule of events and entertainments to welcome visitors, with fireworks exploding over star-lit skies and torch lit descents illuminating the snowy slopes against the dark. Overall, the festive atmosphere around town over Christmas and New Year is wonderful!

Where to Stay

Getting around

Apres

There are a number of excellent bars and cafes in Canazei, offering charming spots for a quiet glass of wine and a few more lively establishments for some après-ski fun.

After a big day on the slopes, it’s hard not to fall into Apres Ski Paradis. This lively bar, nestled on the main road into town from Col Rodello, is a strong town favourite.

Husky Pub is the other main après pub in town, boasting some great live music. Lieber Augustin, located on the main road towards Pozza, is another lively spot to grab a drink – though it does get quite busy.

For a more peaceful beverage on the mountain before you head into town, Baita Cuz is a great bet, while Enoteca Valentini is the place to go if you fancy a wide selection of wines, including an extensive range of local drops.

Eating out

Canazei is home to some excellent mountain restaurants, including great value options and delectable Michelin starred dining.

On the mountain, Baita Checco offers some of the best cooking in the valley – well worth a trip over to the Catinaccio ski area. Rifugio Salei, beneath the Col Rodello, is another wonderful option, as is Baita Cuz.

For couples in search of something special, it’s hard to go past Malga Panna in Moena, which is slightly further afield but well worth the trip. This restaurant plates up Michelin starred cuisine that tastes as good as it looks.

For simple, delicious food and great service, Osteria La Montanara comes highly recommended. It’s also very family friendly, and the prices won’t break the bank.

Below, you’ll find just a few of the fantastic restaurants in Canazei, as voted by our ski holiday experts.

The resort is home to the beautiful Eghes Wellness Centre, which has four themed areas with an assortment of luxurious baths, saunas and other relaxation facilities, as well as a 25m swimming pool. There’s also an ice skating rink in nearby Alba, which is just outside the main resort of Canazei.

Other winter staples like snow shoeing and sleigh rides are also on offer. For more information, the best place to go is the local tourist office. Of course, you can also ask your dedicated chalet host or hotel concierge.

Getting around

Family ski

Canazei is an Italian ski resort in the beautiful Val di Fassa, with a very pretty town centre and spectacular views over the Dolomites mountain scenery. The resort links into the famous Sella Ronda, and Canazei’s slopes suit beginner and intermediate skiers very well indeed. For families, there’s a wide range of services and facilities including magic carpet lifts, snowshoe tours, torchlight descents and ski school services that combine to make Canazei a very family-friendly place to ski. Hotels here offer childcare services, and there are plenty of family-only play areas to enjoy.

Parents in search of childcare can turn to the Pollicino crèche, which offers a comprehensive range of childcare services including supervised lunches and indoor and outdoor play to kids aged from three months to three years old. The facility is open from eight am to seven pm throughout the winter ski season, but parents have to reserve their spaces ahead of time. For evening childcare and babysitting, you’ll find a list of local childcarers at the Canazei tourist office.

Children aged from three to six can burn off their energy in the resort’s many baby parks and playgrounds, or take to the snow on a tobogganing adventure. There’s snow-tubing and horse-drawn sleigh rides to try, and of course ski schools offering a wide array of tuition to young learners. The Marmolada-Canazei Ski School operates a number of kindergartens and nurseries across the valley, with childcare facilities from half-day to full-day available. Entertainments, supervised lunch and ski tuition packages offer parents a wide range of childcare options to choose from, with services running from 8.30am to 5.30pm each day.

Non-ski activities for families to try in Canazei include ice-skating, which you can try on the indoor rink as well as a number of natural open-air rinks. The Dolaondes aqua centre offers four themed areas of swimming and splash pools, slides and more, where kids can let off steam away from the slopes. You’ll also find a bowling alley, cinema, library and even a museum, which shows the rich culture and history of the beautiful Val di Fassa.

Group Ski

If you’re bringing a group of friends or family to the Italian Alps in search of traditional alpine charm, spectacular scenery, lively nightlife and expansive terrain to explore on skis or snowboard, then the welcoming resort of Canazei Val Di Fassa deserves a place on your shortlist.

The resort links into the fabulous Sella Ronda ski area, with neighbouring Selva, San Casiano, Arabba, and Corvara, within reach. This expansive terrain offers gradient best suited to intermediate skiers looking to tuck in the miles on cruisy blue and red pistes, and there’s also a good range of nursery terrain for nervous learners. Groups of experiences skiers and boarders may find themselves getting a little frustrated with the slightly limited piste-length, though, especially if you’re used to larger French ski areas like the Three Valleys or the Espace Killy.

Canazei Val Di Fassa has plenty to offer groups, though. The snow record at the base-level of 1,460 metres above sea level is very strong, and the resort is well-equipped with all the extra snow-making technology for the start and end of the winter ski season.

The après ski scene is lively, with a decent range of welcoming bars to choose from – whether for a drink fresh off the slopes or a night on the town. Foodies enjoy Canazei Val Di Fassa’s diverse and inclusive restaurant offerings, with local eateries serving up a mix of traditional Italian pizza and pasta dishes along side the kind of international menus you expect to find in the larger ski resorts of the Alps.

Groups visiting Canazei Val Di Fassa and coming in search of tuition can turn to the resort’s well-equipped and experience ski schools, with courses in everything from the basic pizza shapes for young learners through to mogul and off-piste clinics for experience skiers nad boarders looking to sharpen their skills on the snow.

Away from the groomed slopes, Canazei Val Di Fassa has a rather limited range of non-ski diversions. Groups considering this corner of the Sella Ronda are advised to steer clear if you have non-skiers  in your party – there’s not a great deal to do away from the snowy slopes! But with cobbled streets, pretty architecture, and spectacular views over the soaring peaks of the Dolomites, it’s a great choice for many people’s group ski holiday in Italy.

Childcare

Canazei is famously home to the oldest ski school in Italy, the Marmolada ski school, who offer excellent instruction for kids as young as 3-years-old. Their facilities include a wonderful “Kinderland” nursery.

A number of hotels also have their own kindergarten and/or children’s club to give parents perfect peace of mind.

The Piste

Intermediate skiers will find the most to love here, while beginners are also well catered for. Seasoned pros may want to consider a resort with more challenges, however there are some great off-piste opportunities in neighbouring Arabba and heliskiing is available for the seriously adventurous.
