Until recently this has been a resort where downhill skiing was almost an incidental attraction. Jasper's location in a region of unspoilt wilderness, beautiful mountain scenery and fascinating wildlife has always had its own magnetic appeal. The village too is unpretentious and charming, the locals truly friendly and activities numerous.
Nowadays however, with the continuing expansion of Marmot Basin, first rate skiing is also on the agenda and, with low prices and great family facilities, this is a resort which can now truly be described as having 'something for everyone'.
The traditional logging and fur trader's village is full of charm and has a surprisingly good selection of shops and bars. Dining out is good value and varied. The Jasper Park Lodge is one of the best spots in town for fine dining whilst there is great fish at Fiddle River Seafood. As befits its remote Rocky Mountain location lots of adventurous excursions like snowmobiling, dogsledding and snowshoeing are available. There is an excellent ice walk down the stunning Maligne Canyon and sightseeing flights are available. This is a great place to relax, unwind and enjoy the amazing natural scenery.
Jasper has a good selection of restaurants ready to serve the ski crowd from 6am in the morning! Many of the eateries are located in the main hotels in town and the lodges, and there is a huge range of different cuisines available.
For pizzas, Jaspers Pizza Palace is well worth a visit, serving homemade pizzas and pasta dishes; they also have a rooftop patio area, perfect for soaking up the rays at the end of the day.
If you fancy Greek food then Kontos is a lovely comfortable restaurant serving Greek and Ukrainian specialities.
Andy’s Bistro is an intimate bistro with the menu changing seasonally to offer local produce in season.
Sawridge Hotel Jasper is an award-winning dining room, serving wraps and burgers during the day and at night serving Alberta steaks, salmon, and wild game.
If you are happy to venture further afield for food then Overlander Mountain Lodge is well worth the trip. There is a log fire in the dining room, or if the sun is shining there’s a large patio overlooking Jasper Park. They serve everything from lobster to ostrich so you won't be short of variety!
If you do want to stretch the budget then The Edith Vavell Dining room is the choice; it is the only restaurant in the Jasper area with a dress code (jacket and tie required for men).
