Apres

Kimberley may be a small resort but it is growing every year. If you’re looking for a few beers at the end of the day then you can head into the old village of Kimberley, it’s about a five minute drive away from the base of the mountain and resort.

The Edge is a lively pub popular with locals and tourists alike. There’s a range of facilities to keep you entertained including dartboards, pool tables, arcade games and a foosball table. The service is always good and there is a fantastic range of beers on offer which sits well with the young crowd. There pub is linked to the youth hostel upstairs so the atmosphere is usually quite lively!

The Sullivan is another popular pub with classic ‘pub grub’ on offer including some excellent burgers and deep-filled sandwiches. Every Wednesday there is a special oyster festival with half price crustaceans on offer throughout the day or if you’re not a fan of seafood then head along on a Monday for 35c chicken wings!

Fisher Peak Lounge is a relaxed bar with a fairly mature feel and some excellent cocktails on offer. There is also a billiards room if you want to enjoy a slightly more relaxing sport. It’s open until midnight at weekends.

Aside from this there isn’t much to Kimberley in terms of après and nightlife so if you’re after anything more than a few beers or a bottle of wine over dinner then you would probably be better off in Whistler or Aspen.

Eating out

Kimberley is a small, purpose-built resort at the bottom of the mountain. However, it gets bigger every year and the old town of Kimberley is only a five minute drive away from resort.

Montana’s is a popular restaurant throughout the year and offers a classic Canadian feel with plenty of wood panelling in the interior, along with great views of the Rocky Mountains. The menu is fairly diverse with international favourites from the Mediterranean and Asia along with traditional North American favourites like ribs, burgers and chicken wings. Montana’s is one of the most popular restaurants in town so booking is recommended.

The Stemwinder Bar & Grill is right at the foot of the slopes and makes a perfect place for lunch or grabbing a bite to eat at the end of the day. There is a huge sundeck to let you soak up a few rays when the clouds part and there is often an open air BBQ which gives a home-style flavour to the food. Live music is also on the menu, along with a few beers, so if you’re looking for somewhere upbeat to grab some food then this is the place for you.
If you just want to grab a coffee and a deep-filled sandwich before heading out on the slopes then the best place for you is the
Slopeside Deli and Coffeehouse. This friendly cafe serves up Starbucks brews and great snacks and is perfect for those who want to do lunch on a bit of a budget.
Taking your own lunch up on the mountain is the most popular way of eating in Kimberley so instead of enjoying a long lunch with table service most people head to one of the ‘warming huts’ that offer you somewhere nice and comfy to relax whilst you tuck into your sandwich. The Kootenay Haus is one of the most popular with a great location by the top of the North Star chairlift and offering washroom facilities.

Activities

During the winter months Kimberley is first and foremost a ski and snowboard resort, so if you’re not interested in snow-based activities then you are better off choosing a resort with a bit more to it – like Serre Chevalier in France with its UNESCO world heritage site just down the road.

Off the main pistes you can give cross country skiing a go with the Kimberley Nordic Club – if you’ve ever watched Eurosport during the day in the winter months then you will have seen just how popular the sport is in much of Europe. Now that Pippa Middleton has embraced it, you can rest assured that it will be the next big thing on the mountains! Equipment can be rented in the resort for around $20 per person and there are three different tracks to choose from – 7km, 5km and 3km as well as a special floodlit loop for night skiing! The skis are very light and as soon as you get the technique sorted you will be zooming along in no time!

Another really popular activity in Kimberley is snowmobiling. For many people in the Rockies it is akin to jumping on a taxi but if you’ve never done it before it is great fun and very exhilarating. Kimberley Snowmobile offer full and half day excursions as well as night rides which allow you to experience the beautiful Rocky Mountains from a totally new viewpoint. A 2.5 hour sunset ride costs around $170 per person with a passenger costing $50. If you’re a bit more adventurous then you can get your own private guide for a day and really head out into the wilderness! Children ages 12 and under ride for free with their parents.

A more environmentally friendly way of enjoying the stunning scenery is to head off on a snowshoeing expedition. The Winter Sports School in the centre of the resort can arrange 2 hour expeditions for beginners and intermediates from 6.30pm – must be booked in advance.

Totally away from the slopes and the mountains, you can head to Kimberley’s outdoor ice skating rink and try your hand at a bit of ice hockey or figure skating. The rink is open from 6pm to 8pm each evening and you can rent equipment locally for a nominal fee.

Another option is to head to the Regalanes Bowling Centre in town for five pin bowling or ‘cosmic’ bowling in the evenings. It’s a great family option if the weather closes in!

There is also a cinema in the centre of town that shows all of the latest releases.

Kimberley is first and foremost a ski resort, though it becomes very popular amongst golfers during the summer. As it’s quite a small resort there isn’t too much to do off the slopes so if you’re looking for a large range of non-ski activities, you may want to look towards larger resorts like Whistler, Aspen or Jackson Hole. That said, there are a few things to keep kids entertained!
